In recent weeks there has been talk on social media of a new artificial intelligence technology that would challenge the credibility of future student assessments. So what is this new AI technology and what is its potential impact on education? This blog examines these questions and considers whether such advances in technology mean that now is the time to rethink how we teach and assess our students.
The technology everyone is talking about isChat GPT-3, developed by OpenAI. This tool is now the largest language model currently available. To use it, just ask a question or make a statement, hit enter, and the tool will instantly generate human-like answers in the form of essay, blog post, multiple choice question, poem, computer code, etc. The is much more sophisticated than anything we've seen before and works differently than a search engine. Essentially, it uses machine learning to predict the next word in a sentence based on previous text. The results are quite remarkable.
During the holiday season, social media was full of fun conversations people were having with Chat GPT-3. An example that made me smile was someone asking Chat GPT-3 to tell their son that Santa Claus wasn't real.
One of GPT-3's most impressive features is its ability to generate human-like responses, as demonstrated by the answer to Santa's question. But that also means that it's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish a student's own work from work they've created using such artificial intelligence technology. Trotzdetection technologyIt is also evolving rapidly, the text matching services used by institutions would not detect plagiarism in these cases as it is technically original text but not that of a human.
However, this is not a new topic. If we remember the Corona times and the necessary online exams, concerns were raised about the increase in plagiarism cases because students had access to the Internet during their exams.
Perhaps now is the time to take another look at how we evaluate our students. Chat GPT-3 could be the catalyst that forces us to do this. One thing is for sure, given the increasing use of these AI tools, demonstrated by Jasper.AI's recent $1.5 billion valuation, these technologies are not going anywhere.

As a credit to Chat GPT-3, he goes on to offer some helpful suggestions as to how we might adapt our assessment techniques to measure student understanding levels. Considering I didn't actually ask him to suggest any solutions for me, it's quite remarkable that he managed to successfully predict this as relevant information that I would later find useful, although I ridiculed myself, that no proposal involved using Chat GPT -3. For example, asking students to critique an answer provided by Chat GPT-3. That being said, I still think we should also comment on the benefits that AI technology like this can bring to education. Teachers can and use the generated data to inform their lessons.
